Michelin Earthmover Tire Safety Program

Backgrounder
The Earthmover Tire Safety Program is taught in 12 one-hour sessions. These sessions explain tire safety best practices to managers, maintenance personnel, equipment operators and support staff at mines and quarries. MSHA certified Michelin field sales team members or the safety team at the mine or quarry will lead the sessions.

Program Description
Each session is designed to accomplish a specific tire safety training objectives, as outlined below.

Module One–Safety and Tire Management
The first session is targeted toward mine management and provides an overview of the program and cover common factors that can affect the safe use of tires at mines and quarries.

Module Two–Personal Tire Safety
This session teaches mine and quarry employees what they should know when choosing and maintaining tires on their personal vehicles.

Module Three–Tire Selection and Limits
The third session covers the importance of selecting the right tires for the right machines and operating environments. The instructor covers how to determine and manage worksite factors that affect tire safety.

Module Four–Delivery, Storage and Handling of Earthmover Tires
This session will discuss how to handle earthmover tires before they are mounted on a machine, including proper transportation, delivery and storage.

Module Five–Safety Around Rim and Wheel Components
Module five discusses the types of earthmover rims and wheels, tools used when mounting tires on them and safety reminders about rim/wheel damages and maintenance.

Module Six–Mounting, Inflation and Demounting
In module six, program participants learn how to mount, inflate and demount an earthmover tire.

Module Seven–Haulage and TMPH
This session discusses the haulage conditions and their impact on ton miles per hour and tire performance.

Module Eight–Tire Technology
The eighth session shows the function of an earthmover tire as well as the tire design and technology evolution.

Module Nine–Tire Inspection and Damage Assessment
This session provides instruction in inspecting an earthmover tire to assess damage or tire wear. The session has numerous examples of tire damage and possible causes for these damages.

Module Ten–Tire Shop Work Environment
This session covers maintaining a safe and productive tire shop work environment.

Module Eleven–Tire Repair
Program participants learn the intricacies of tire repair and importance of proper repair for performance and safety of earthmover tires.

Module Twelve–Nitrogen Inflation and Tire Fires
The final session shows participants how to prevent and deal with tire fires as well as the basics of nitrogen inflation.
