Michelin Announces Mining Essay Contest

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Michelin Earthmover Group announced today that it is accepting applications for its inaugural Michelin Mining Essay Contest. The essay contest is open to all full time students pursuing a degree in a mining specific field at an accredited university. Students must have at least 30 credit hours and not be scheduled to graduate before spring 2006.

Essays must be received by Oct. 31, 2005. Selection is based on whether the essay addresses and answers the topic chosen, originality, writing ability and communications skills. A panel of judges from throughout the mining industry will select the winners. Two winners will be selected, each receiving $3,000 (USD).

The essay topic is: What major advancements in surface mining methods and technology will be used in the next 10 years, especially those that relate to safety and productivity?

To apply, students must fill out an application, complete with typed essay and transcripts, and mail them to Michelin North America, Inc. There is no cost to apply. Winners will be announced in Dec. 2005.

“Safety and productivity are as important to Michelin as they are to our customers,” said Kaan Demirel, market segment manager for mining at Michelin Earthmover North America. “This essay contest will allow us to journey into the future of mining and help us continue to provide the best solutions for our mining customers’ needs. These students are the leaders of tomorrow. We want to help educate them and get them thinking about safety and productivity in mining and innovative ways to accomplish that mission over the next decade and beyond.”

Michelin believes that it has a responsibility to provide support to future mining engineers and mining professionals. The Michelin Mining Essay Contest is designed to provide prizes to mining engineering students throughout the U.S. and Canada, and help support future leaders of the mining industry.
